Terms of Use
Effective 4 August 2026.
Cosmic Capture Kit is a screen capture tool that runs on your computer. There is no service behind it, no account to create, and no server of ours in the loop, so these terms are short.
The software and its licenses
- On Linux, Cosmic Capture Kit is free software under the GPL-3 license. The source is public, and the GPL's own terms govern what you may do with it.
- On macOS and Windows, the official builds are paid software sold through the platform stores. Your purchase is a license for you, on your machines. Teams of three or more people are asked to buy a copy per person. There is no license check in the app; this works on honesty.
No warranty
The software is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, to the fullest extent allowed by law. That includes no promise that it is free of defects, fit for a particular purpose, or that captures, recordings, or uploads will never fail or be lost. For the GPL build, the GPL's own warranty disclaimer applies as written.
Your content
What you capture is yours. The app claims no rights over your screenshots, recordings, or anything the scanner reads. It is also your responsibility: you decide what to capture, what to keep, and where to send it.
Recording or photographing other people may require their consent depending on where you live. Knowing and following the law where you are is on you.
Cloud uploads and other services
If you connect a cloud account, uploads go directly from your computer to that provider under your agreement with them. We are not a party to that relationship. The providers' own terms and acceptable-use rules apply to anything you store there, and your access to those services is theirs to grant or withdraw, not ours.
Updates
The app can check for updates and tells you when one exists; installing is always your choice. We work on the software because we care about it, but these terms promise no particular updates, features, or support.
Changes to these terms
If the terms change, this page changes, and the effective date at the top moves. Meaningful changes are called out in the release notes.
